Uses & Benefits
St. John’s wort produces bright yellow flowering tops rich in hyperforin, hypericin, flavonoids, tannins, and related phenolic compounds. For topical use, the fresh flowers and upper leaves are traditionally infused in oil, gradually turning it deep red. This infused oil is best known for calming irritated skin and supporting the appearance of minor surface recovery, but its photosensitivity potential, instability, and extensive oral medication interactions require unusually careful handling and communication.
Calming Irritated & Stressed Skin
• Traditional oil preparations have been applied to dry, tender, reddened, or weather-stressed skin.
• Hyperforin, flavonoids, and other constituents demonstrate inflammation-modulating activity in laboratory research.

Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
St. John’s wort is a temperate perennial native from Europe and northwestern Africa across much of Asia. Hold one of its narrow leaves toward the light and tiny translucent oil glands appear like pinholes, inspiring the species name perforatum, meaning “perforated.” The yellow petals also contain dark glands that release reddish pigment when crushed.
Its common name connects the flowering herb with the feast of St. John the Baptist near the summer solstice, when European communities traditionally gathered it at peak bloom. The flowering tops were steeped in oil for weeks, transforming pale carrier oil into a characteristic ruby-red preparation used on bruises, minor burns, irritated skin, and tender areas. That color became a practical sign that the fresh flowering material had released key pigments into the infusion.
Modern research is still investigating many of those topical traditions, while oral St. John’s wort has become famous for both mood-related use and extensive drug interactions. The herb therefore carries two very different identities: a carefully prepared topical infused oil and a systemically active oral medicine. Its place in botanical skincare depends on respecting that distinction, preserving its traditional flower-rich preparation, and treating sunlight and interaction concerns seriously.
