Myrrh is an aromatic gum-resin released from the bark of Commiphora myrrha, a thorny tree adapted to the dry regions of northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its resin contains volatile terpenes and other compounds studied for antimicrobial, antioxidant, and inflammation-modulating activity. In topical care, myrrh is valued primarily for cleansing, comforting, and protecting stressed or blemish-prone skin, although much of the modern evidence remains laboratory-based or rooted in traditional use.

Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
Myrrh begins as a pale, sticky exudate that seeps from cuts or natural cracks in the bark of Commiphora myrrha. The small, thorn-tipped tree grows across the dry shrublands stretching from Ethiopia and Somalia into Kenya and the southern Arabian Peninsula. As the resin meets the air, it darkens and hardens into irregular amber-brown tears with a bitter taste and a deep balsamic scent.
The resin became one of the ancient world’s most valuable aromatic materials because it could be transported without spoiling and served several purposes at once. Egyptians used myrrh in perfumed preparations and embalming, while communities across northeastern Africa, Arabia, and the Mediterranean burned it as incense and prepared it for cleansing the mouth and skin. Its importance in early trade made hardened resin tears far more valuable than their rugged desert source might suggest.
Traditional preparations included chewing small pieces, dissolving resin in alcohol or wine, grinding it into powders, and incorporating it into oils or ointments. Modern topical use continues to draw from this long-standing cleansing and protective reputation, while distinguishing the whole resin from stronger essential oils and standardized extracts.
