Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
Lemon balm is a perennial herb native from the Mediterranean region into western and Central Asia. Its softly textured, heart-shaped leaves release a distinct lemon scent when rubbed, while the plant’s small pale flowers attract bees. The genus name Melissa comes from the Greek word for honeybee, reflecting the plant’s longstanding reputation as a bee-friendly garden herb.
Greek and later European herbal traditions valued the leaves for their pleasant aroma and prepared them in teas, wines, bathing waters, washes, and household remedies. The herb was often planted near hives, where its scent and flowers helped connect it with beekeeping as well as domestic medicine. Its common name “balm” reflects its historical association with comforting and soothing preparations.
Modern topical use focuses on the leaves, but preparation determines what the finished ingredient actually contains. Water- and alcohol-based extracts retain antioxidant phenolics such as rosmarinic acid, while distillation concentrates a much smaller aromatic fraction. Lemon balm remains valuable because its gentle citrus character is paired with meaningful antioxidant and calming chemistry rather than fragrance alone.
