Uses & Benefits


Horsetail is an ancient, non-flowering herb distinguished by its unusually high silica content and its jointed, brush-like green stems. Its aerial parts also contain flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and other constituents associated with antioxidant and inflammation-modulating activity. In topical care, horsetail is most relevant for antioxidant support, minor surface recovery, and hair or scalp formulas, although many popular strengthening claims exceed the available human evidence.

Antioxidant & Skin-Comfort Support
• Horsetail extracts contain flavonoids and phenolic compounds with laboratory-observed antioxidant activity.
• Laboratory research suggests that its calming activity is not explained by silica alone.
• These properties may support formulas for environmentally stressed or uncomfortable-looking skin.
• Direct human cosmetic research remains limited, so horsetail should not be presented as a proven treatment for inflammatory skin conditions.

Minor Surface Recovery
• A randomized controlled study of a specific horsetail ointment reported improved healing measurements, reduced swelling, and less discomfort after episiotomy.
• This provides preliminary human evidence for topical surface-recovery support.
• The study involved a defined ointment and a particular clinical setting, so its results cannot automatically be applied to every homemade infusion, powder, or extract.
• Horsetail should not replace appropriate care for deep, infected, or slow-healing wounds.

Hair Strength & Surface Condition
• Horsetail’s silica content has made it a longstanding ingredient in hair-strengthening rinses, tonics, and scalp preparations.
• Suitable extracts may help hair feel more substantial or conditioned by depositing plant-derived material along the hair shaft.
• Evidence does not establish that topical horsetail increases the internal silica content of hair, prevents breakage, or reverses hair loss.
• Claims that it regrows hair or permanently strengthens follicles are not supported by adequate human trials.

Scalp & Oil-Balance Support
• Its mildly astringent plant compounds may complement formulas intended for oily or easily weighed-down scalps.
• Antioxidant and inflammation-modulating activity may help support a more comfortable scalp environment.
• There is insufficient evidence to claim that horsetail treats dandruff, scalp infection, or inflammatory scalp disease.

Silica, Extraction & Formula Quality
• Horsetail accumulates silica within its stems, giving the dried plant a distinctly rough, abrasive texture.
• Silica is not extracted equally by water, glycerin, alcohol, or oil, and a whole-herb infusion should not be assumed to deliver a standardized amount.
• Water-soluble flavonoids and phenolic compounds may be more relevant to many botanical extracts than the popular silica claim suggests.
• The species must be correctly identified because other Equisetum species may differ in composition and safety.


Botanical Origins & Traditional Use


Horsetail belongs to one of Earth’s most ancient surviving plant lineages. Long before flowering plants appeared, giant relatives of modern Equisetum formed part of prehistoric forests. Today’s field horsetail grows across much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, producing pale, fertile shoots in spring followed by green, branching stems that resemble miniature horse tails.

The rough stems became practical household tools because silica embedded in their surface acted like a natural abrasive. Different horsetail species were used to scour wooden utensils, polish metal, and clean cookware, giving rise to names such as scouring rush. The green aerial parts were also prepared as washes, compresses, and herbal remedies for minor wounds and other concerns.

That same mineral-rich structure later shaped horsetail’s reputation in hair and nail products. Modern formulation, however, requires a clearer distinction between folklore and chemistry: the plant is genuinely rich in silica, but extraction method determines what enters the finished product. Its enduring value lies in the combination of its remarkable mineral structure, antioxidant compounds, and limited but promising topical research.
