Uses & Benefits
Green tea is valued in skincare for its high concentration of catechin polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate, commonly called EGCG. These compounds provide antioxidant, calming, and oil-balancing activity, making properly prepared green-tea extracts especially relevant to blemish-prone, environmentally stressed, and mature-looking skin. Green tea is more than a simple botanical infusion, however; its effectiveness depends on extract strength, stability, and protection from heat, light, air, and unsuitable pH.
Antioxidant & Environmental Defense
• Catechins help neutralize free radicals produced by ultraviolet exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors.
• This antioxidant activity can support a calmer, more resilient-looking complexion and help limit visible oxidative damage.

Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
The tea plant is an evergreen shrub native from the eastern Himalayas through southern China and northern Indochina. In cultivation, repeated pruning keeps it low enough for workers to gather the tender shoot tips and youngest leaves by hand. Green, white, oolong, and black teas all come from this same species; their differences arise largely from how quickly the harvested leaves are heated, rolled, dried, and allowed to oxidize.
China developed the earliest enduring tea culture, first using the leaves as food, a medicinal infusion, and a stimulating drink. By the Tang dynasty, tea cultivation and preparation were already firmly established. Buddhist monks later carried tea to Japan, where its alerting effect supported long periods of meditation and eventually became woven into formal tea traditions.
Green tea is heated soon after harvest to limit enzymatic oxidation, preserving more of its green color and catechin-rich character than heavily oxidized teas. That processing distinction explains its modern cosmetic importance: carefully stabilized leaf extracts offer a concentrated source of antioxidant polyphenols for formulas intended to defend, calm, and rebalance stressed-looking skin.
