Glycerin is not obtained from one particular herb. It is a naturally occurring part of fats and oils, where it forms the backbone that holds fatty acids together as triglycerides. Vegetable glycerin is produced by separating and purifying this glycerol portion from plant oils, creating a thick, clear, mildly sweet liquid that mixes readily with water.

The substance was first identified in the eighteenth century during experiments with olive oil and later received the name glycerin from a Greek word meaning “sweet.” Its early practical uses grew through soapmaking and pharmacy, where craftspeople noticed that it attracted moisture and prevented preparations from becoming excessively dry or brittle.

Modern botanical skincare uses glycerin for the same physical property that made it valuable historically: its unusual ability to bind water. Unlike a plant extract chosen for one specialized active compound, glycerin serves as the moisture-carrying foundation that helps skin and botanical formulas remain supple, stable in texture, and comfortable to use.
