Feverfew is a daisy-like herb whose topical value depends heavily on how it is processed. The whole plant contains parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone with strong sensitizing potential, while specially prepared parthenolide-depleted extracts have demonstrated calming and antioxidant activity. For skincare, the safer and better-supported form is a professionally manufactured, parthenolide-depleted extract—not an ordinary whole-herb infusion.

Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
Feverfew is native from southeastern Europe through western Asia and the western Himalayas. It bears small white-and-yellow flowers resembling miniature daisies and produces strongly aromatic leaves. The name “feverfew” developed from its long association with fever and headache remedies, although its modern botanical name, Tanacetum parthenium, reflects a complicated history of classification among several daisy-like genera.
European herbal traditions commonly used the leaves and flowering aerial parts, prepared fresh, dried, or infused. Feverfew became especially associated with headache and fever rather than cosmetic care. Direct handling of the plant, however, also revealed an important limitation: its sesquiterpene lactones can provoke significant skin reactions in susceptible people.
Modern cosmetic use represents a scientific departure from traditional whole-herb preparation. Instead of preserving every plant constituent, manufacturers may deliberately remove parthenolide to reduce sensitization while retaining antioxidant and skin-calming activity. This distinction is essential to understanding why a specialized feverfew extract may be useful in skincare while raw feverfew is not automatically appropriate.
