Catnip is an aromatic herb whose leaves and flowering tops contain nepetalactone-rich volatile oil. That compound is best known for attracting many cats, but it also gives catnip its strongest cosmetic relevance: research-supported insect-repellent activity. Catnip herb, essential oil, hydrosol, tincture, and oil infusion differ significantly in concentration and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Mosquito-Repellent Activity
• Nepetalactone-rich catnip essential oil has demonstrated meaningful repellency against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in laboratory and human-participant studies.
• Different nepetalactone isomers and plant chemotypes can vary in potency, making standardized composition important.
• Recent field research also supports catnip-oil lotions as promising botanical mosquito repellents.
• Repellency data for concentrated essential oil do not prove that weak tea, glycerite, hydrosol, or homemade infusion will perform equally well.
Deterrence of Flies and Other Pests
• Catnip essential-oil compounds have shown feeding and egg-laying deterrence against stable flies.
• Laboratory research also reports repellency against German cockroaches and selected nuisance insects.
• These findings make catnip valuable in outdoor botanical formulas, although protection can vary by insect species, concentration, and formulation.

Botanical Origins & Traditional Use
Catnip is native from southern and eastern Europe through western and central Asia and into parts of the Himalayas and China. It later naturalized widely across North America and other temperate regions. Its gray-green, softly hairy leaves release a penetrating mint-like scent when bruised, while its small pale flowers rise in clustered spikes.
The name cataria reflects the plant’s famous connection with cats. Nepetalactone released from damaged leaves can trigger sniffing, rubbing, rolling, and playful behavior in many—but not all—cats. Long before its insect-repellent chemistry was formally studied, catnip was grown in European household herb gardens and used in teas and traditional preparations.
Its modern repellent value comes from the same volatile chemistry released when the leaves are crushed. Researchers isolated nepetalactone from the essential oil and confirmed activity against mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and other insects. That distinction is essential: the aromatic leaves and flowering tops provide the repellent compounds, while highly diluted herbal preparations may contain too little volatile oil to offer dependable protection.
